Task Order

An order for services placed against an existing IDIQ contract or vehicle.

A task order is how work is actually assigned under an IDIQ, GWAC, or BPA. The base contract sets terms and admits a pool of holders; individual task orders are then competed among that pool (a "fair opportunity" competition) or issued directly where an exception applies. A delivery order is the equivalent for supplies rather than services. Most protest activity in modern federal contracting happens at the task-order level.
