Affiliation

An SBA concept where the size of related businesses is combined, potentially disqualifying a firm from small-business status.

SBA affiliation rules aggregate the receipts and employees of businesses that control one another or are under common control — through ownership, management, contractual relationships, or economic dependence. Affiliation is the most common reason a firm believed to be small is found other than small during a size protest. Structure teaming and JV relationships with affiliation in mind from the start.
